\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Following a nationwide\nsearch, Dr. Rowena M. Tomaneng has been selected as the next president of San\nJos\u00e9 City College (SJCC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A first-generation\nimmigrant from the Philippines, Dr. Tomaneng has been an educator in the\nCalifornia Community College system for nearly 25 years, serving most recently\nas President of Berkeley City College (BCC), a position she has held since\n2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are very pleased to have a candidate of\nDr. Tomaneng\u2019s caliber to serve as the next president of San Jos\u00e9 City\nCollege,\u201d said Dr. Byron D. Clift Breland, chancellor of San Jos\u00e9 \u2013 Evergreen\nCommunity College District (SJECCD). \u201cShe brings a depth and breadth of\nexperience that will help us continue our positive trajectory at SJCC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At BCC, Dr. Tomaneng\u2019s leadership centers on social justice,\nstudent equity, and community engagement. Her professional\naccomplishments include the development of the Berkeley Promise, expansion of\nBCC\u2019s Undocumented Community Resource Center, and growth of Learning\nCommunities that provide wrap-around student services and culturally responsive\ncurriculum to African American, Latinx, and Asian Aamerican\/Pacific Islander\nstudents who are first-generation and low-income college students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Dr. Tomaneng fosters a collaborative approach among faculty, classified professionals, and administrators in enrollment management and major state initiatives including Guided Pathways, Student Equity and Achievement, and Strong Workforce. Statewide and nationally, Dr. Tomaneng serves on the boards of the Chief Executive Officers of the California Community Colleges, Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education, and the National Asian Pacific Islander Council. She is currently the co-Chair of California Campus Compact\u2019s Community Colleges for Democracy and a member of the American Association of Community Colleges Commission on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to her tenure as\npresident at BCC, Dr. Tomaneng held multiple positions at De Anza College,\nincluding associate vice president of instruction, dean of language arts,\ndirector of the Institute of Community and Civic Engagement, and tenured\nfaculty member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has earned an Ed.D in\nInternational\/Multicultural Education with a concentration in Human Rights\nEducation from the University of San Francisco; a master\u2019s degree in English\nfrom University of California, Santa Barbara; and a bachelor\u2019s degree in\nEnglish from University of California, Irvine. Dr. Tomaneng began her\npost-secondary education in the California Community College system as a\nstudent at Cypress College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m very excited to be\njoining San Jos\u00e9 City College. SJCC is well-known throughout the state as one\nof the strongest and most innovative community colleges in California,\u201d Dr.\nTomaneng said. \u201cI look forward to working closely with my new colleagues among\nthe administration, faculty, and classified professionals to continue to move\nthe institution forward and find new and innovative ways to serve our students\nand our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith SJCC preparing to\ncelebrate its 100th<\/sup> anniversary in 2021, now is an opportune time to\nset a course for the next 100 years and Dr. Tomaneng has the skills and\nexperience to do so in collaboration with the dedicated team of professionals\nat the college already,\u201d Chancellor Clift Breland said. \u201cI also want to recognize and thank Mr. Roland\nMontemayor, who has advanced the institution and done a great job serving as\nacting president while we conducted this search.\u201d Prior to his appointment as\nSJECCD chancellor in 2018, Clift Breland himself served as president at SJCC\nbeginning in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
