What is Communication Studies?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It may seem obvious, but it\u2019s important to be clear here, because Communication Studies is often confused with \u201cCommunications.\u201d But that \u201cS\u201d at the end makes all the difference \u2014 here’s why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communication Studies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Communication Studies or \u201cCommunication\u201d refers to the many complex ways that people share, receive, and interpret messages \u2014 as individuals, groups, or organizations. It includes communication in all its forms, like oral, written, and visual. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Communication Studies major or degree, students examine communication theory and apply communication skills in real-life situations. They interpret the meaning created by messages in almost any human context you can imagine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communication scholars and students study and practice different forms of strategic messaging shared in many different ways. This might include things like public speaking, advocacy, and argumentation. They also examine more informal communication spaces \u2014 among families, friendships, and all kinds of partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

However, \u201cCommunications\u201d (with that S) means something rather different. It refers to how those messages are delivered. So a Communications degree involves the study of \u201cthe methods and channels selected for transmitting the message.<\/a>\u201d Sometimes it is more appropriately referred to as \u201ctelecommunications,\u201d or \u201cmedia studies,\u201d since it includes radio, television, film, and digital media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to their inherent interconnectedness, it\u2019s no surprise that some institutions offer slightly combined versions of these degrees. Some clearly blend the two (UC Santa Barbara<\/a>), while others do not (UC Berkeley<\/a>).
