Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/future-students\/support-programs\">support programs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/the-roar.net\/?p=5069\">innovative learning<\/a> systems, and an emphasis on community, help us fulfill our equity-driven mission to best serve all students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/News\/pages\/sjcc-in-top-25-schools-.aspx\">top Latinx-Serving Institution<\/a>, we offer excellent programs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/current-students\/support-programs\/eop-s\">EOP&amp;S<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/academics\/academic-programs\/metas\">METAS<\/a> to help create pathways to success for underrepresented students in higher-education. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepuenteproject.org\/\">The Puente Project<\/a> is also key to Latinx and Chicanx success at SJCC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today we\u2019ll be learning more about the history of this essential program, and how Puente\u2019s community serves as a bridge to academic success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cAll of the counselors and professors let it be known that Puente is here for us puentistas. [&#8230;] everything about Puente has made me a better student.\u201d<\/p><cite>Angelique Garcia, SJCC Puente Student<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Puente Project?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepuenteproject.org\/\">The Puente Project<\/a> was founded by Felix Galaviz and Patricia McGrath in 1981, at Chabot Community College in Hayward, California.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepuenteproject.org\/about\">Its mission<\/a> \u201cis to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students who enroll in four-year colleges and universities, earn college degrees and return to the community as mentors and leaders to future generations.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is currently sponsored by the University of California and the California Community Colleges Chancellor\u2019s Office. Since its founding, it has helped more than 300,000 Latinx students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let\u2019s learn more about its roots and incredible accomplishments over the past thirty years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Puente Project, Since 1981\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/259149144?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Grassroots Approach: Puente\u2019s Rule of Three<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puente started out as a grassroots project to combat the \u201clow rate of academic achievement among Mexican American and Latino students.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To better understand the challenges and obstacles causing this inequity, Galaviz and McGrath reviewed over 2,000 transcripts. They discovered three key patterns: \u201cstudents were avoiding academic counseling, students were not enrolling in college-level writing courses, and students were the first in their families to attend college.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To directly address these issues, they created the Puente model. A three-pronged approach of \u201crigorous instruction, focused academic counseling, and mentoring by members of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puente works with first-year college students, and that same approach persists today. It also consists of three phases. In their first year, Puente students must&nbsp; complete key Guidance, Ethnic Studies, and English courses in the Fall and Spring Semesters (Phase 1 &amp; 2) followed by ongoing mentoring until graduation (Phase 3). This comprehensive method is key for students who face an inequitable system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sabrina Hagmann, a Puente Counselor at SJCC said, \u201cPuente provides a space for our students to flourish in a system that originally was not made for them.\u201d She also spoke of the importance of the counseling courses, which provide students \u201cthe social and cultural capital they need to succeed in college.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UCRP Leadership and Writing Conferences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puente also collaborates with the University of California, Riverside to offer students free multi-day residential conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepuenteproject.org\/copy-of-ucrp-leadership-conference\">The UCRP Writers\u2019 Conference<\/a> is a 6-day opportunity for growth. Puente students from all over the state come together to improve their writing skills, learn from successful authors, and connect with their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepuenteproject.org\/copy-of-social-networks\">The UCRP Leadership Conference<\/a> is a 10-day program that cultivates leaders in the Latinx community. Sixty Puente students are selected to participate in this enriching event. They learn about the power of community involvement, how to promote academics and make a positive impact on all students in higher-education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puente\u2019s Diverse and Growing Programs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puente started out at a Bay Area community college, but it has since grown immensely. It currently operates in 65 community colleges, 38 high schools, and 6 middle schools across California. More recently, it has even crossed state lines, on campuses in Texas and Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this growing network primarily serves Latinx populations, Puente gladly welcomes all students to participate. In fact, faculty and staff are working hard to revitalize the program in new ways, so that they can help more students achieve their dreams and academic goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long-time Instructor and Puente Coordinator, Juan Gamboa is leading these efforts. \u201cPuente is Spanish for \u201cbridge,\u201d and we see the Puente program as a bridge that serves as the pathway to students\u2019 futures, a connection to their past and where students themselves are bridges connecting their families, histories, culture, dreams, community towards academic excellence, leadership and transformation.\u201d Gamboa said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Puente Project cultivates confident students who feel supported and empowered to succeed and make a difference in their community \u2014 here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puente Values Ethnic and Chicano\/a Studies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ethnic Studies is crucial to the three-pronged approach of Puente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHistory through an ethnic studies framework is important because we encourage students to make connections between the past and present, and to see themselves as history makers not just readers of history.\u201d Gamboa said. \u201cEthnic studies history reveals a hidden history of solidarity where we have stood up for each other, across race, class, gender and sexuality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This understanding is essential, so that students can better appreciate the struggles and resilience of their collective history. But it is equally important that they learn to celebrate the beauty in the strength and perseverance of their ancestors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cEthnic studies history reveals a hidden history of solidarity where we have stood up for each other, across race, class, gender and sexuality.\u201d<\/p><cite>Juan Gamboa, SJCC Instructor &amp; Puente Coordinator<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puente Cultivates Community for Chicanx and Latinx Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puente students proudly identify as puentistas for a good reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe very best part about joining Puente is being able to be around a community of students and instructors who care about you! [&#8230;] they are always willing to go that extra mile to help.\u201d Said SJCC student and puentista, Yesenia Hernandez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another puentista, Wendy Villalobos, echoed this feeling of inclusion, \u201cto feel like you are part of a community and knowing that you have the support whenever you need it is very important for Latinx students. Especially because it\u2019s very common for us to be first generation students.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe best part about joining Puente is that it has made me more confident in my schoolwork. I am comfortable to ask questions [&#8230;] I never find myself overwhelmed with self doubt.\u201d Said Angelique Garcia, another Puente student.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPrograms like Puente are extremely necessary and important for Latinx students because it represents students who go unrepresented. Everyone understands each other as well as their struggles. There are no barriers when it comes to the Puente program. But every family also needs its wise leaders. In Puente, they come in the form of counselors, professors, and mentors \u2014 each plays a crucial role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have mentors whom I can contact whenever I am faced with challenges in my academic and personal life.\u201d Garcia said. \u201cAll of the counselors and professors let it be known that Puente is here for us puentistas. Whether it be the courses, counselors, or professors, everything about Puente has made me a better student.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe best part about joining Puente is having a guidance counselor who can help me plan for the future.\u201d Said Villalobos Avila. All puentistas agree \u2014 they can depend on the support of their Puente family to help them achieve their goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puente Promotes Equity and Community at SJCC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best part about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/future-students\/support-programs\/puente\">Puente at SJCC<\/a> is that it plays an important role in the larger community on campus. It proudly joins forces with other groups and organizations to have a greater positive impact on students\u2019 experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCollaboration across programs is very important because one program can\u2019t provide all the services and support students need [&#8230;] we need each other to support students..\u201d Gamboa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puente works with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/academics\/academic-programs\/metas\">METAS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/current-students\/support-programs\/eop-s\">EOP&amp;S<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/future-students\/support-programs\/umoja\">UMOJA<\/a>, MEChA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/current-students\/on-campus-resources\/sjcc-sparkpoint\">SPARKPOINT<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjcc.edu\/academics\/departments-divisions\/ethnic-studies\">Ethnic Studies<\/a> Department to support students, often engaging with surrounding educational institutions.
