We\u2019re thrilled to announce that San Jos\u00e9 City College\u2019s Early Childhood Education Program has received its Accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children<\/a> (NAEYC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, the ECE Associate in Science for Transfer, which is a great option for students who want to transfer to a 4-year university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what you need to know about SJCC\u2019s incredible opportunities for educators who hope to teach our youngest learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Early Childhood Education (ECE)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Preschoolteacher.org<\/a> defines early childhood education as \u201cany type of educational program that serves children in their preschool years, before they are old enough to enter kindergarten.\u201d This distinction from later education is important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to UNESCO<\/a> (who extends ECE to eight years old), it\u2019s a time of remarkable growth, when brain development is at its peak. A stage when \u201cchildren are highly influenced by the environment and the people that surround them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNESCO also argues that it\u2019s \u201cmore than preparation for primary school.\u201d Because it focuses on \u201cthe holistic development of a child\u2019s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the NAEYC Accreditation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the NAEYC<\/a>, the \u201cmission of the accreditation system is to set a standard of excellence for early childhood degree programs and to recognize programs that have demonstrated they meet this standard, thereby benefiting the early childhood profession, young children, families, and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are extensive benefits<\/a> to gaining this accreditation, which include fostering an ongoing commitment to innovative learning, more partnerships within the community, and even an increase in funding opportunities. The NAEYC accreditation requires a long and rigorous application process. So it\u2019s no surprise that only the best early childhood education programs receive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
