With new developments<\/a> in the Health at Every Size<\/a> (HAES) and intuitive eating<\/a> movements, it\u2019s an exciting time to get into nutrition and dietetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Jos\u00e9 City College has offered nutrition classes for many years, but it was only in 2019 that we established our first AS-T Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics<\/a>. Today, we are thrilled to provide you with the ins and outs of this new transfer degree. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This two year associate\u2019s degree can get you started on the path to a 4-year university of your choice. But let\u2019s not get ahead of ourselves. Here\u2019s everything you need to know if you\u2019re thinking about becoming a nutrition major at SJCC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Nutrition and Dietetics?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s explore what we mean when we say \u201cnutrition and dietetics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical News Today<\/a> states that \u201cNutrition is the study of nutrients in food, how the body uses them, and the relationship between diet, health, and disease.\u201d The Encyclopedia of Food Sciences and Nutrition<\/a>, says that Dietetics is \u201c\u2018the application of the science of nutrition to the human being in health and disease.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essentially, Nutrition is the scientific knowledge and Dietetics is the practical application of that knowledge. This part is simple, but when we start talking about careers in the field, things can get a little confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the Difference Between a Nutritionist and a Dietitian?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In practice, nutritionists and dietitians may do similar things, but not always. Officially, there is a major distinction between the two, but it\u2019s a little less obvious. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s break it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most would agree, the defining difference is<\/a> that in the United States, \u201cdietitians must receive certification from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)<\/a> in order to practice.\u201d They can get accredited as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). The second may seem like a hybrid, but we\u2019ll call both of these dietitians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nutritionists may have a similar educational background, but their training varies more, and they don\u2019t need to receive accreditation to practice. Here\u2019s how some of the major differences<\/a> play out in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
