President Flores Addresses Library Controversy, Shares Spring Updates in Video Message

San José City College President Dr. Marilyn Flores released a video message this week addressing several pressing campus issues ahead of spring break — including the ongoing conversation surrounding the renaming of the SJCC Library and the future of its mural.

Earlier this week, students, faculty, and staff gathered for a town hall to share concerns and discuss next steps. In her message, Dr. Flores acknowledged the weight of the moment.

“The Chancellor, Trustees, and I are working diligently on the process to address the library and mural,” she said. “We want to make sure this is all done in a thoughtful way that considers the input we have received so far.”

The video also covers three institutional updates: SJCC’s Student Pathways to Opportunity and Transfer (SPOTs) program and enrollment planning efforts, the college’s Resource Allocation aimed at bringing greater transparency to fiscal decisions, and a $4 million perimeter security upgrade that includes new ornamental fencing, gates, and improved lighting across campus.

Dr. Flores closed her message with a note of encouragement, thanking students for their resilience and wishing the campus community a restful break.
