Jaguars Sweep Three Games at the Tip-off Classic

The San José City College Jaguars men’s basketball team started their new season with an impressive three-game sweep in the annual Tip-Off Classic Tournament held at Percy Carr Gym Nov. 2-4. Here’s a recap of the games.  

Game 1: Nov. 2 SJCC 73 – Palo Verde 42   

In an exciting matchup in the Tip-off tournament, Palo Verde and SJCC faced off in a game showcasing both teams’ skills and talents. The game started with both teams trying to find their rhythm. Palo Verde’s starters took the court, hoping to set the tone for the game. However, the Jaguar’s defense was strong, making it difficult for Palo Verde to find open looks.  

As the game progressed, both teams made substitutions, bringing in their reserves to provide a spark. SJCC’s reserves made an immediate impact, with Kameron Bailey leading the way with 6 points and 19 rebounds. His presence on the boards was crucial for the Jaguars, as he secured offensive rebounds and gave his team second-chance opportunities.  

Jacob Harper had a standout performance for SJCC, scoring 23 points on 8-9 shooting, including 3-4 from beyond the arc. His shooting prowess was a major factor in the Jaguar’s victory.

Despite their best efforts, Palo Verde could not overcome the Jaguars’ strong performance. Turnovers and fouls plagued Palo Verde throughout the game, preventing them from gaining momentum.  

Ultimately, the Jaguars came out on top with a final score of 73-42. They shot 40.9% from the field, 25.9% from three-point range, and 63.2% from the free-throw line. Their solid shooting and strong defense were the keys to their victory. Both teams showed great sportsmanship and played with intensity and passion. The game was a testament to the talent and skill of these young athletes.   

Game 2: Nov. 3 SJCC 87 – Feather River 66  

Feather River and SJCC had their fair share of scoring opportunities. Feather River College had a shooting percentage of 40.9% overall, making 27 out of 66 field goal attempts. They were effective from beyond the arc, shooting 42.9% (6 out of 14) from three-point range. However, their free throw shooting was not as strong, with a percentage of 41.7% (5 out of 12).  

On the other hand, the Jaguars had a shooting percentage of 43.8% overall, making 32 out of 73 field goal attempts. They were slightly less accurate from three-point range, shooting 41.2% (7 out of 17). However, their free throw shooting was much better, with a percentage of 64.0% (16 out of 25).  

TJ Steed was one of the standout players for Feather River College, scoring 9 points on 3-9 shooting from the field. He also contributed four rebounds, six assists, three steals, and one block. Marquis Hall-Wagner also had an impressive performance, scoring 13 points on 6-9 shooting. He grabbed six rebounds and had one assist and two steals.  

Jerel Victor was the leading scorer for Feather River College, putting up 18 points on 7-14 shooting. He was particularly effective from beyond the arc, making 3 out of 6 three-point attempts. He also contributed three rebounds, five assists, and five steals and did not commit any turnovers.  

Jacob Harper was one of the standout players for SJCC, scoring 15 points on 6-11 shooting from the field. He also made 2 out of 3 three-point attempts and contributed four rebounds, two assists, and one block. Julius Wilson also had an impressive performance, scoring 17 points on 7-11 shooting. He made 3 out of 5 three-point attempts and grabbed two rebounds.  

Kameron Bailey was a key contributor off the bench for the Jaguars, scoring 12 points on 6-14 shooting. He also grabbed an impressive 12 rebounds, showcasing his ability to crash the boards. Owen Browne also had a solid performance off the bench, scoring 8 points on 1-5 shooting and making all 5 of his free throw attempts.  

SJCC’s strong shooting and balanced scoring helped them secure a comfortable victory over Feather River. Both teams showed their skills on the court, but the Jaguars’ shooting efficiency and contributions from their bench players ultimately made the difference in the final score.  

Game 3: Nov. 4 – SJCC 73 – San Mateo 54  

The game started with a close first quarter, with San Mateo scoring 30 points and SJCC scoring 31. However, the Jaguars turned up the heat in the second quarter, outscoring San Mateo 42-24. This strong performance in the second quarter ultimately secured the win for the Jaguars.  

The Jaguars had a more efficient shooting performance. They made 41.9% of their field goals, compared to San Mateo’s 33.9%. SJCC also had a higher three-point shooting percentage, making 33.3% of their shots from beyond the arc, while San Mateo only made 20% of their three-point attempts. The Jaguars also had a strong free-throw shooting percentage, making 86.7% of their shots from the charity stripe.

Individually, San Mateo’s Pawllos Habtom had an impressive game, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He was a dominant force on the court, contributing significantly to his team’s efforts. Jason Montgomery also had a solid game, scoring 11 points and making two three-pointers.  

Isaiah Saams-Hoy was the standout player for the Jaguars, scoring 18 points and making one three-pointer. Tariq Weiser and Jacob Harper also had strong performances, scoring 14 and 13 points respectively.  

In terms of team stats, the Jaguars had a higher number of assists, with 12, compared to San Mateo’s 5. SJCC also had more steals and blocks, showing their defensive prowess. Both teams had similar turnovers, with San Mateo committing 15 turnovers and SJCC committing 11.  

Overall, it was a well-fought game between. the Jaguars’ strong shooting and defensive performance ultimately led them to victory. Both teams showed their skills and determination on the court, making for an exciting game in the SJCC Tip-off Classic.
