San José City College celebrated the opening of its brand-new Facilities and Operation Building and Emergency Operations Center with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event heralded the $14.2 million investment in campus infrastructure made possible by a voter-approved bond measure.
“I want to thank the community for supporting our vision. Today would not be possible without the passing of Measure X in 2016,” said Dr. Rowena M. Tomaneng, SJCC president.

SJCC developed the new FM&O Building to replace decommissioned facilities that housed custodial and other campus maintenance services. It puts offices, shops, and yards all in one place. It also unifies the San José Evergreen Community College District’s Emergency Operations Center and Maintenance & Operations departments, centralizing emergency response during a man-made or natural disaster.
“Our grounds and custodial crews have a stunning new building to call home. Morale has been raised, work orders are timelier, and operational effectiveness is borne out by having a building where you are organized, and everything is efficient,” said SJECCD Associate Vice Chancellor of Physical Plant Development and Operations Toby Smith.
Aedis Architects is responsible for the state-of-the-art design with JGM Construction Management and Falk Construction, Inc., making it a reality.
“We can’t serve our students without the critical effort of our custodial and grounds staff,” Tomaneng said. “They are the unsung sheroes and heroes, and they deserve this beautiful building as their SJCC Jaguar home base.”
