MONTEREY, Calif. — Synise Byrd scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead San José City College to a 68-23 victory over Monterey Peninsula College on Friday, clinching at least a share of the CCCAA Coast-South conference championship.
The Lady Jags shot 46.3 percent from the field and held the Lobos to just 13.2 percent shooting, building an insurmountable 26-9 lead after the first quarter and never looking back.
Byrd, who went 10-of-18 from the field and 3-of-7 from 3-point range, was one of five San José starters to score in double figures. Kaydin Meyer added 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Hayley Johnson chipped in 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Ember Navarro finished with 22 points, and Daven Woodham contributed 11.
San José outrebounded Monterey Peninsula 36-22 and forced 19 turnovers while committing just 12 of their own.
Maryjane Haro led Monterey Peninsula with 10 points, going 4-of-16 from the field, including 2-of-8 from beyond the arc. Valeria Segura added six points on 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line. The Lobos shot just 10.5 percent from 3-point range on 2-of-19 attempts and converted only 53.8 percent from the charity stripe.
San José led 26-9 after one quarter, 44-15 at halftime, and 61-18 heading into the fourth period, rendering the final frame academic.
San José City College shares the conference co-championship with Hartnell College, marking a significant program milestone heading into the postseason.
