Percy Carr’s journey to becoming a basketball coaching legend began over four decades ago, marked by perseverance, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his players and the game. Born and raised in the humble neighborhoods of Tulare, California, Carr developed an early love for basketball, a sport that would later define his career and legacy.
Early Life and Passion for Basketball
Percy Carr grew up in an era where opportunities for Black athletes and coaches were limited. Despite the challenges, his passion for basketball shone through. He played the game with a tenacity and skill that caught the attention of local coaches and mentors. Carr’s determination on the court earned him a scholarship to play college basketball at the College of the Sequoias. His time there was marked by exceptional performance, and he later transferred to Fresno State University, where he majored in physical education and minored in humanities. At Fresno State, Carr’s interest in coaching began to take shape, laying the foundation for his future career. Â
The Start of a Legendary Career
After graduating, Carr began coaching at Edison High School in Fresno, quickly making a name for himself. His ability to connect with players and his strategic mindset set him apart. In the late 1970s, Carr received an opportunity that would change his life: a coaching position at San José City College (SJCC).
From the outset, Carr’s impact was profound. He inherited a struggling team, but with his leadership, they soon became a force to be reckoned with in junior college basketball. Carr’s coaching style blended discipline, encouragement, and tactical brilliance. He emphasized the importance of academics and personal development, ensuring his players were well-rounded.
Record-Breaking Success
Over the years, Percy Carr’s teams became synonymous with success. Under his guidance, the Jaguars went to the playoffs 32 out of 36 years. He guided eight different Jaguar teams to the State Championships, claimed 12 Conference Championships, and produced 17 first-team all-state players.
His dedication and hard work culminated in his 900th career victory on Feb. 2, 2018, in Salinas, where his team triumphed over Hartnell College with a 72-63 victory. This milestone victory cemented Carr’s place in history as the coach with the most wins among Black men’s college basketball coaches. Â

This consistency speaks volumes about his loyalty and commitment to San José City College and its basketball program. Under his guidance, the college became a nurturing ground for young athletes, many of whom went on to play at four-year colleges and even professionally. His 900 career wins are the most in California community college history, a testament to his enduring excellence.
A Legacy Beyond Wins
While Carr’s win record is impressive, his legacy extends far beyond the numbers. He is known for his mentorship and positive impact on players’ lives. Many of his former players credit him with teaching them valuable life lessons that have helped them succeed off the court. His emphasis on education and character development has left an indelible mark on countless young men.
Carr’s contributions to the community have also been significant. He founded the Creative Athlete Retention Response (CARR) program at San Jose City College, which assists student-athletes academically in preparing them to transfer to a four-year university.
The CARR Program offers athletic and academic advice to all SJCC athletes, and an impressive 97 percent of SJCC basketball players attend a four-year university. His work has been recognized with various awards and honors, including his induction into the California Community College Basketball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame in March 1998.
In September 2000, he was honored by the 100 Black Men of Silicon Valley Organization as the Educator of the Year.
